May 9, 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of Bulgaria’s membership in the European Union. Our country joined the European family in 2007, believing in the words of one of the founding fathers of the EU, Jean Monnet, “There is no future for the people of Europe other than in union”. On May 9, 2022, from 10.00. until 11.30, in Zaimov Park, a sports holiday and celebration of Europe Day was held, which was attended by children from the 195 “Mormarevi Brothers” kindergarten. The host of the event was Nadezhda Panayotova, the Bulgarian voice of one of the favourite Disney cartoon characters – Elsa.
The event was organized by the Bulgarian sports development association (BSDA), the Sunday School at the Church of the Nativity, the Sunday School at the Church of St. Martyr Paraskeva, Association of Bulgarians with Asthma, Allergy and COPD, with the permission of Sofia Municipality. Darko Team Athletics School contributed to the sports smiles, which besides with the sports specialists, joined in with an attractive mascot that delighted the children – the Darko wasp. The excellent organization was taken care of by volunteers, including young people from Sofia schools and young sports specialists from the National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski”.
In the late hours of May 9, a European flashmob was held, which was attended by athletes with intellectual disabilities and representatives of Adapted Basketball at the NSA “Vasil Levski”, who dribbled to the sounds of the EU anthem, sending the message that within the Union all we are United in diversity, as is the motto of the European Union. The two events focused on the unifying values of the EU – freedom, peace, equality, family, responsibility, justice, tolerance and solidarity, and the participants in both events got acquainted with the sports activities within the #SPORTolerance initiative, co-funded under the Erasmus+ programme of the European union, which aims to contribute to further human capacity development in sport through development of set of mobilities for sport coaches that will include both educational modules and modules for exchange of good practices in the field of using sport for prevention of radicalization and building tolerance and solidarity.
